This month, our MAP NSTAT team wrapped up the Art Safe program, an eight-week series of multidisciplinary art classes for local youth, funded through the Office of Neighborhood Safety’s (ONS) VIBE Youth initiative. Art Safe aims to engage older youth in cultural and community programming, promote safety and creative expression, and culminate in a public art project.
As part of the program, ten local youth attended improv classes led by The Black Lady Theater twice a week. These sessions allowed participants to explore emotions, community dynamics, and peer pressure, with a curriculum shaped by the youth’s real-life experiences.
They also participated in expressive art sessions with Marcette Studios, which integrated lessons from the improv classes and added a therapeutic element. These sessions provided emotional support and encouraged self-reflection. Each class concluded with affirmations and journaling, promoting personal growth.
On December 12, participants collaborated with The Black Lady Theater and Marcette Studios to present a public culminating event at our Queensbridge Community Center. The event featured several improvisational performances and works of art, showcasing the youth’s creative growth.
Overall, the program provided a safe space for youth to process emotions, build community, and develop new skills. Our sincerest thanks to ONS, our partner art organizations, and the participants for their hard work and dedication!
