Last month, 52 older adults from Riis’ Senior Center and NNORC program had a wonderful opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C and Maryland for a weekend. After a long break, we are delighted to resume offering cultural excursions like these, giving older adults the chance to travel outside of their neighborhood with their peers in a safe, supportive environment. We are incredibly grateful to our funder, the D.J. McManus Foundation, for supporting this excursion and others.
Participants first visited the National Museum of African American History and Culture, a Smithsonian museum just steps from the Washington Monument. Our trip to the African American Museum in Philadelphia this past spring was very popular among participants, so this was a great continuation of the same theme, celebrating the resilience, achievements, and art of African Americans.
Later that evening, older adults enjoyed dinner together and stayed overnight at the DoubleTree Hotel by Hilton. The next day, they visited the Arundel Mills Mall and the National Great Blacks Wax Museum in Baltimore, before heading back to NYC. Thank you to Riis staff for planning and executing such a fun and enriching trip. Our older adults are already looking forward to future outings!
