Riis Academy’s First Spelling Bee

Last week, Riis Academy youth came together for a Spelling Bee at P.S. 171! From each of our after-school sites, two students from each grade (3rd-Middle School), qualified. Riis Academy group leaders and site directors, as well as students’ parents, were in attendance for the event, and enjoyed a pizza lunch together. First, second, and third-place winners from each grade received a medal, trophy, and special certificate from Council Member Julie Won.

Literacy is incorporated across all Riis Academy programming, from homework help and tutoring to visual arts and STEM lessons. This Spelling Bee was a fun and exciting way to showcase participants’ growing vocabulary, reading comprehension, and public speaking skills. Congratulations to our youth for doing such an amazing job!
