Program Spotlight: NNORC

Riis’ Neighborhood Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NNORC) is designed to help older adults age safely within their own homes while staying connected to the larger community. Riis’ NNORC team makes regular wellness calls, provides nursing and case management services, as well as makes referrals to other community and city programs in order to meet the various needs of seniors. Riis’ senior center often acts as the first point of access to older adults in need, as they come in for meals and other programs.

Recently, Riis’ NNORC team provided much needed assistance to Manuel Gonzales, a regular senior center attendee. When Manny was experiencing significant maintenance issues and safety hazards in his apartment, NNORC director Edna Walden and bilingual case manager Eliana Bauta stepped in to get him the help he needed. From visiting his home, assessing the issues, and working with NYCHA management to expedite repairs, to communicating directly with Manny’s family to find temporary housing and clean out his apartment, the NNORC team found a sustainable solution to the problems Manny was experiencing. He now has a safe, clean, and livable home!
