In early 2024, the Administration for Children’s Services selected Riis to launch a Family Enrichment Center (FEC) in Astoria, where families can come together to receive support, shape programs, and learn in a welcoming and safe environment. Since then, we’ve made significant strides in building our team and creating a space that feels like home for the Astoria community. Now, let’s introduce the talented individuals leading the way to make this vision a reality.
Introducing Connor Kaufman (top left), the director of the Astoria FEC. With a master’s degree in public administration, Connor has held various positions with FECs in New York and was instrumental in forming the Bronx CTC coalition of nonprofits in the South Bronx.
Also on our FEC team is Tasmeem Ruba (front center), our community liaison. With experience working with children in after-school programs and interning as a housing specialist, Tasmeem is excited about the opportunity to “support and uplift the voices of Astoria’s diverse community through our FEC” and looks forward to making our center “a safe space for our community.”
Charnell Francis (far left) is our family advocate. With over eight years of experience as a schoolteacher and a master’s degree in early childhood education, she is committed to utilizing her “skills and experiences to advocate for families and children in our community.”
Arely Hernandez (far right), also a family advocate, is a familiar face at Riis. Transferring from our Riis Academy department to our FEC team, Arely brings a valuable perspective through her experience with youth and families in western Queens.
Together, our FEC team is building the foundation for a vibrant new hub of community growth in Astoria. Each FEC is unique, and we’re excited to watch the Astoria center evolve as our community plays an active role in shaping its future. Our center will officially open in the spring, creating a new space for families in Astoria to thrive and connect.
