Our Immigrant Services department has had a busy few months, facilitating ESOL classes, citizenship preparation classes, and coordinating several clothing drives and distributions. A few highlights from the season include our Immigrant Rights Workshop series and fall ESOL graduation ceremonies.
We are constantly working to create an inclusive and welcoming space for all our participants. In November, we held eight Immigrant Rights workshops for our ESOL students to inform them about their legal rights and available resources. Facilitated by our Outreach Coordinator, Kevin Rojas, each workshop was designed to combat misinformation and empower students with accurate information about their rights and protections. Topics covered included U.S. immigration policy, navigating interactions with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and accessing free legal resources and city services.
In mid-December, Riis hosted ESOL celebrations at our three program sites—Queensbridge, IS 126 in Astoria, and PS 69 in Jackson Heights—to recognize students’ completion and dedication to our fall ESOL courses. A total of 238 students attended, each receiving a certificate of completion for the semester. Several teachers and staff members were also recognized for their support of the students. After the ceremony, everyone celebrated their hard work with a fun karaoke session!
We look forward to kicking off our winter ESOL semester at the end of the month and continuing to build an even stronger community while supporting our participants in reaching their full potential.
