Connecting Community Members Through English Tutoring

In addition to robust ESOL and Citizenship preparation classes, Riis Settlement’s Immigrant Services team offers a 1:1 English tutoring program. In 2022, 90 dedicated volunteers provided over 350 combined hours of English tutoring, developing students’ conversation skills outside of their classes and building their confidence. One participant, Cynthia (left), said about her tutor Julia (right): “She is kind and she explains me the things very well and patiently. I learned expressions that I could use in my work as well as in daily life. I would like my English to be more fluent so I won’t be afraid to express myself. I’d like to have more opportunities with a better job.”

Another participant, Yldania, shared: “I can say that it was positive because I notice improvements. I felt comfortable with Becca [tutor]. The topics we talked about were about work, family, and day to day life. Also, she was supportful, available, provided new words that I took advantage of using them in my everyday. I want to thank to Jacob Riis Settlement for offering this great tool to the students, and thanks Becca for being willing to help me anytime.”

Our volunteer coordinator, Ievgeniia, has done a fantastic job recruiting and training volunteers, pairing them with our ESOL students, and managing their partnerships throughout each semester. We look forward to continuing to offer this program in 2023.
