After 23 years of extraordinary leadership, William T. Newlin stepped down as Executive Director of Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement House on July 31, 2013. Christopher Hanway, former Director of Development & Communications at the organization, has assumed his role as the Executive Director effective since August 1, 2013.

Under Mr. Newlin’s leadership, Riis Settlement’s organizational budget has increased 30-fold, and the agency has expanded from its headquarters in Long Island City to five campuses and added dynamic programs serving the area’s older adults and growing immigrant community. He will work closely with his successor over the next five months to ensure a smooth and effective transition. “Serving as Executive Director has been the most challenging and rewarding experience of my professional career and, while I will miss what has been my second home for over two decades, it is time for new challenges for me and new blood for the organization” said Mr. Newlin.

Mr. Hanway has headed Riis Settlement’s fund development and communications efforts for over four years and has over 12 years of professional experience in the not-for-profit sector, most notably at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center and the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.  “I am truly honored and excited to take on this new role at Riis Settlement in service of an organization and a community that has grown very close to my heart over the past four years.”
