Description

Job Title: ESOL Teacher - Family Literacy
Department: Immigrant Services

We are seeking a passionate and experienced ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Teacher to join our Family Literacy Program team. The ESOL Teacher will work closely with the Project Manager and other program staff to provide high-quality English language instruction to parents and families, helping them develop language skills that promote integration and participation in the community. The teacher will also play a key role in supporting literacy, civic engagement, and family-focused educational initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Instruction: Develop and deliver engaging, learner-centered ESOL lessons that meet the needs of immigrant families. Lessons should focus on practical language skills for everyday use, including communication at work, in schools, and in the community.
  • Curriculum Development: Collaborate with the Project Manager to design and implement an effective curriculum that integrates language learning with elements of family literacy, civic engagement, and cultural awareness.
  • Assessment and Progress Tracking: Regularly assess participants’ language proficiency and progress, providing feedback and adjusting lesson plans as needed to ensure participants’ success.
  • Family Literacy Integration: Coordinate with PACT (Parent and Child Together Time) teachers to integrate family-focused literacy activities into the ESOL curriculum, promoting intergenerational learning and engagement.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Create a safe and welcoming learning environment that respects the diverse cultural backgrounds of program participants, fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment.
  • Support and Guidance: Provide individual support to learners as needed, offering guidance on language acquisition, goal-setting, and overcoming challenges to learning.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of attendance, lesson plans, and student progress. Assist in reporting on program outcomes as needed for internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, TESOL, Linguistics, or a related field
  • TESOL/TEFL certification or equivalent ESOL teaching qualifications are required.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience teaching ESOL to adults, preferably in a community-based or non-profit setting.
  • Proficiency in Spanish (spoken and written) is required for this position.
  • Experience working with underserved populations and a strong understanding of the challenges faced by non-native English speakers.
  • Strong classroom management skills, with the ability to adapt lessons to meet the needs of a diverse learner population.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Familiarity with digital tools and platforms for remote or blended learning.
